There are an estimated 20,000 homeless orphans living on the streets of Eastern Russia—left behind, abused and abandoned to the harsh elements of street life.
In July 2008, World Challenge staff Bettina Marayag, Michael Petillo and Ashley Wilkerson traveled to this region in Eastern Russia to witness this great and pressing need. They visited an overcrowded, state-run orphanage, where three- and four-year-old children ran up to them, flung themselves into their arms just wanting to be hugged. They also visited Christian homes where children had been adopted from the streets. They were amazed at the difference in these children’s lives—these kids were filled with joy, laughter, song and the spirit of Christ’s love. They eat well and are kept safe from harm. And they attend a Christ-centered church where they are loved and taught the Good News of Jesus.

One of those adoptive couples, Sveta and Sasha, saw the needs of these precious little ones, and their just hearts broke for them. Jesus so touched them with compassion for wounded, homeless children that they opened their humble two-bedroom apartment to them. At present they have adopted twenty children, rescuing them from a life of suffering, abandonment, and most likely crime and prostitution. Some have been rescued from the street, while others have come from cold, gray, government orphanages that are overcrowded and understaffed. Several of the girls—some even as young as eight—were rescued from organized crime groups and forced prostitution.
Sveta and Sasha’s influence has touched and moved other couples, inspiring them to do the same. Lena and Sergei, have now adopted eighteen children. They have a small patch of land where they grow fruits and vegetables and raise chickens and rabbits but their living space is very small. Seven children sleep together in the living room, two on each twin bunk bed and the whole family shares one bathroom—they desperately need a larger place to live. The couple was given free land but they have no funds to finish a house that will provide more space.
These couples need support to provide food, transport and shelter for their adopted children. We believe God is moving us to help finish building a home that can accommodate more children. One hundred percent of every dollar that comes in for this goal will go directly to supporting the needs of the orphans. We are totally depending on God. The more he provides through your generous contributions, the more children we will be able to help. Please pray with us about this opportunity to touch the lives of these precious children.
